Caring for Faith: Sometimes Ranch Life Isn't Pretty

There are moments on a ranch that fill your heart with joy—watching new calves take their first steps, seeing the herd grazing peacefully at sunset, or listening to the sounds of nature on a quiet morning.

And then there are days like this.

Meet Faith, one of our Black Angus cows here at TimberlyLane Ranch.

A few days ago, we noticed she was limping badly. As any cattle owner knows, lameness is never something to ignore. We brought her in for a closer look and discovered a large abscess in her hoof.

The pressure had built up enough that it finally ruptured, revealing the infection that had been causing her so much pain. While it certainly wasn't a pretty sight, it was actually an important step toward healing. Once the pressure was relieved, we were able to begin cleaning the wound, treating it, and monitoring her closely.

Getting Faith to the corral was a challenge all its own. She was in so much pain that every step was difficult. My stepson and I slowly worked with her, giving her time and trying not to make her move any faster than she could manage. What normally would have been a simple walk to the corral took us more than two hours.

And getting her there was only the beginning.

For the next several weeks, Faith stayed where we could keep a close eye on her. Every day I brought her fresh water and feed and made sure she had a bale of hay. We cleaned and treated her hoof and watched the way she walked, looking for those little signs that told us she was beginning to feel better.

It wasn't a one-day problem with a quick solution. It became part of our daily routine for weeks. Every morning, one of the first things on my mind was Faith—How is she walking today? Is she eating? Is that hoof looking better?

That's the part of raising animals that doesn't always make it into the pretty pictures. When one of them is hurting, everything else doesn't simply stop. The rest of the herd still needs tending, chores still need doing, and life on the ranch keeps moving. You simply make room for one more thing that needs your care.

Looking at this photo reminds me that caring for animals isn't always the picture-perfect version of ranch life that people often imagine. It means early mornings, difficult decisions, dirty boots, and sometimes tending to painful wounds.

Our animals depend on us to notice when something isn't right.

They can't tell us where it hurts.

They simply trust us to care.

Faith is already showing signs of improvement, and we're hopeful she'll be back out walking comfortably with the rest of the herd soon. We'll continue treating her until she's fully healed because that's what stewardship is all about.

Owning cattle isn't just about raising livestock.

It's about accepting the responsibility to care for God's creation—even when it's messy, inconvenient, or heartbreaking.
